FAQ

Where do the plates come from?

From natural history books published between 1797 and 1925: Audubon's Birds of America, Sargent's Silva of North America, the New York fisheries reports, the Smithsonian's North American Wild Flowers and others. We work from scans of library copies; every plate is credited to its artist, book and year. See Sources.

Did you redraw them?

No. We clean the page, separate the drawing from the paper and set the names and keys in new type. The drawings themselves are as their makers left them.

Why are some names different from the book?

Scientific names change as we learn more. Each plate shows the name in use today and keeps the book's own name in the legend.

What are the shirts?

Comfort Colors 1717: heavyweight 100% ring-spun cotton, garment-dyed, relaxed fit. See Fit & Care for sizing.

How long until my order ships?

Each shirt is printed for you after you order. Most orders are printed and on their way within 2–5 business days; delivery time depends on the shipping method you choose at checkout. During the holidays, production can take a little longer. See Shipping & Production.

Can I return or exchange a shirt?

If your shirt arrives damaged, misprinted or defective, contact us within 30 days of delivery with a photo and we'll send a replacement or a refund. You won't need to send it back. Because every shirt is printed to order, we can't accept returns or exchanges for size or a change of mind, so please check the size guide before ordering.

Do you take suggestions?

Yes. If there is a species you'd like to see, or an old field guide on your shelf we should look at, tell us.
